Formed as a joint-stock company in 1854 (to lay out the city of St. Peter in Nicollet County), it was incorporated in 1856 under the laws of the territory of Minnesota as the Saint Peter Company. The company--a driving force in attempting to move the state capital from St. Paul to St. Peter--closed its affairs to the public (but did not disincorporate) in 1865. In 1901, the Great Northern purchased the charter rights and continued the corporate life. The company filed for voluntary dissolution in 1959.
