The company was organized in 1882 and built a 25-mile rail line from Shirley (Polk County) to St. Hillaire (Pennington County), with construction capital provided by GN's predecessor, the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway. The latter company purchased the line in 1883 and merged it into its system. The corporation's charter expired by statute in 1932. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
