The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam. The company was incorporated in 1889 to take over the construction rights of the Duluth and Winnipeg Syndicate, which had been organized to build the Duluth and Winnipeg Railroad in northern Minnesota. That company had built a 20-mile line north from Cloquet. Its successor built an additional 125 miles, extending the line to Grand Rapids.
