The railway was incorporated in 1887 and built a railway line from Brownsville to the international boundary (24 miles). In 1898 control of the line was acquired by the Seattle and Montana Railroad Company, a GN subsidiary, and in 1907 the line was sold to GN. All remaining assets were transferred to GN in 1924. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
