The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam. Incorporated in 1897 as the Kootenay Coal Company. The Great Northern became interested in the company in 1902, as a source of both fuel and freight revenue, and had purchased a controlling interest in its capital stock by 1907, at which time its name was changed.
