Correspondence of the David B. Christie family who farmed in Rapidan Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota (1868-1886), and raised sheep near Bozeman, Montana (1886-1920). Topics include the family farm in Blue Earth County, David's move to Montana (1886), his struggles to become established as a sheep rancher, his health, his wife (Mary Emma Stratton), and their family. There is much correspondence from David's brother, Alexander, who wrote of his career with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, his gold prospecting sojourn in Alaska (1898-1901), and subsequent career writing and teaching in Montana. Stratton family letters describe farming activities and family life in Blue Earth County, Minnesota.

David B. Christie was born in Watertown, Wis., in 1848 of Scottish immigrants who came to the U.S. about 1847. David was the fourth of four children of James and Eliza Reid Christie. On 4 July 1870 David married Mary Emma Stratten also of Watertown. While living in Wisconsin and Minnesota, Emma gave birth to seven children, with their first child dying within two years. John Lind was born in 1854 in Sweden and emigrated to Minnesota in 1868. From a career as a lawyer he went on to become the first Swedish-born American elected to the United States House of Representatives.
