The Committee for Industrial Organization was formed by the presidents of eight international unions in 1935. The presidents of these unions were dissatisfied with the American Federation of Labor's unwillingness to commit itself to a program of organizing industrial unions. The Brewery Workers Union was founded in 1886, when the original five local unions from Newark, New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Baltimore met in convention. The result of the convention was the union's membership to the American Federation of Labor(AFL). The Brewers remained with the AFL until the late 1930s when the union joined the nascent Congress of Industrial Organization (CIO).
