The Ronald Keith Sorem Papers contain extensive material on deep-sea mining research for manganese nodules, basic research by Ronald K. Sorem on the composition and formation of manganese nodules, and information on organizations promoting and funding this research. There is also information about his career as a geology professor at Washington State University including material about his classes and about the geology department. Also contained is material about the Marine Mineral Resources Museum at the University, which he was instrumental in founding. There are general files regarding research expeditions Dr. Sorem was on, grant proposals and consulting projects, and information on his book "Manganese Nodules," 1979. Other files pertain to his work with the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and there are files documenting his work for the United States Geological Survey in the Philippine Islands, and on the Domes Project and the United States Exclusive Economic Zone Symposium. As a member of the International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits and an officer of its Commission on Manganese, there is information on that association's symposium and its participation in other international mining congresses.

Ronald K. Sorem was born in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1924. He received his Masters degree from the University of Minnesota in 1948 and his Ph. D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1958. He was a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey from 1948 to 1955, working in Cuba, Maine, and the Philippine Islands and then a Professor of Geology at Washington State University from 1959 to 1983.
