The John Anthony Quitman Papers concern Quitman's actions as a general in the Mexican War, Governor of Mississippi, U.S. Representative for Mississippi, and a Masonic official. Letters document his military service in Mexico and honors bestowed upon him at Natchez, Washington, and Charleston. Printed items include his inaugural address to the Mississippi Legislature, his nomination and acceptance of his Congressional post, and his denial of charges of diverting arms belonging to the State of Mississippi for use by Cuban insurrectionists. Other printed items are an address of the Louisiana Democratic Association, the constitution of the Natchez Fencibles, newspapers concerning Narciso López and the Cuban expedition, and volumes on the Mexican War and the history of Mexico. Family letters, diaries, cashbooks, and notebooks of his wife, Eliza Turner Quitman, her daughters, and her relatives relate social affairs, amusements, politics, epidemics, gardening, education, and travel at Natchez and New Orleans. Two recipe books of Louisa Quitman Lovell describe the arts of cooking, preserving, and wine making.
