J. M. J. Lyons Diary, 1882-1906 1882.

The collection consists of a diary written by J. M. J. Lyons while serving aboard the U.S. Navy ships Independence and Wachusett. The diary primarily covers the time period January to November 1882, during which time Lyons visited Sitka (Alaska), Wrangell (Alaska), and other Alaskan coastal ports. The Wachusett also made stops in Hawaii and the South Pacific. Lyons records daily activities, military exercises, the weather, and his thoughts and hopes for his sailing career. In addition to daily notations, the diary also includes poems, songs, and drawings of ship flag signals with notes to their meaning. The diary also contains what appear to be drafts of letters, including one to Lyons' father dated 1906. At times, the handwriting in the diary is significantly different, and it is possible that others may have added their own entries or notes.
