Details Cooke's service in the Virginia militia and the Confederate Army, including the Army of the Potomac, the Army of the Mississippi, the Army of East Tennessee, the Army of Western Virginia, the Army of North Carolina and Southern Virginia, the Army of Northern Virginia, and the Army of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Cooke served on the staffs of Philip St. George Cocke (1809-1861), Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard (1818-1893), Braxton Bragg (1817-1876), Samuel Jones (1820-1887), William Montgomery Gardner (1824-1901), Thomas Jordon (1819- 1895), and Robert E. Lee (1807-1870). Cooke was stationed in and travelled throughout Virginia, western Virginia, Tennessee, and Mississippi. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh, 1862, and was with Lee during the retreat to Appomattox. In addition to details of army life, Cooke recorded war-time visits to Belmead plantation, Powhatan County, Va., and his thoughts on religion.
