Papers, 1848-1898.

Diary, 1880-1892 (10 v.), speeches and addresses, 1848-1898, and commonplace book of lawyer William H. Travers of Charles Town, Jefferson County, W. Va. The diary describes Travers's legal work for the Shenandoah Valley Railroad, the Cumberland Valley Railroad, the Luray (Va.) Cave and Hotel Company, and other clients. Entries record the details of his travels to attend court sessions in eastern West Virginia and western Virginia and to conduct business in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and include the names of judges and opposing lawyers, train schedules, and hotels at which he stayed, as well as local events. When at home in Charles Town and visiting his daughter's family in Roanoke, Va., Travers recorded weather observations and made frequent mention of the activities of his grandson, William Travers Coe, and other members of the Coe family. Speeches and addresses include Travers's valedictory speech, St. Mary's College, Baltimore, 1848; and talks given at dedications, commencements, and before various learned societies. The commonplace book contains fragments of poetry and prose.
