Travers, William Hicks, 1826-1899.
Lawyer, of Charles Town, Jefferson County, W. Va. Travers was born in Dorchester County, Md., and moved with his family to Baltimore as a child. In 1848 he graduated from St. Mary's College, Baltimore, and shortly afterwards began to practice law. A Democrat, he served as Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, 1856-1857. In 1861, he and his family relocated to his wife's family home in Charles Town, Va. (now W. Va.), to avoid the conflict of the Civil War. After the war, Travers decided to remain in West Virginia permanently. He was an active member of the West Virginia bar, practicing in county courts throughout the eastern Pan Handle and in western Virginia, and was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1871-1872.
