Emily Howland was a Quaker reformer, educator and philanthropist. In the mid 1850s, she was a teacher in a school for African American girls. During the Civil War she helped organize the Freedman's Village at Camp Todd for refugee slaves, where she worked as nurse and teacher. After the war, she opened a school for African Americans. Joseph Tallcot was the son of Gaius and Sarah (Caustin) Talcott. He married Sarah Hawxhurst in 1789. Tallcot taught school near Washington, Duchess County, N.Y., this later became the Friends School at Nine Partners (1797). He was the author of "The Friendly visitant for parents and children" (1817?) and "The child's companion, being a collection of easy pieces of prose and poetry for young readers" (1818).
