Ethel Kitch Yeaton collection on Edward Scribner Ames and James Hayden Tufts, 1911-1914.

This collection contains four of Ethel Kitch Yeaton's notebooks from courses she took with Edward Scribner Ames and James Hayden Tufts, professors of philosophy at The University of Chicago. Two of her notebooks, one entitled "Psychology 44" concerning the psychology of religion, and another entitled "Abnormal Psychology," were probably taken in lecture from Ames. A third notebook, "Philosophy Seminar," contains notes from a lecture Tufts delivered on Kant's ethical theory and "Critique of Pure Reason." Lecture notes from another class given by Tufts are found in the fourth notebook, "Philosophy 12." Some of the notebooks also contain various loose notes.

Ethel M. Kitch from McComb, Ohio, received her Oberlin A.B. in 1906 and Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1914. She taught psychology and/or philosophy at Oberlin from 1908 to 1935. She became Associate Professor of Philosophy in 1914 and Professor in 1926. Edward Scribner Ames was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on April 21, 1890. He was the son of a Disciples of Christ Minister, and became a minister himself after his graduation from Drake College (A.G., 1889, A.M., 1891). Ames received his B.D. from Yale in 1892, and accepted a doctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago in 1894.
