Lewis gathered the materials in this collection as a result of her family research and participation in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, the Jamestown Society, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Huguenot Society. The genealogical materials cover the Butts, Claiborne, DeLaWare, Harrison, and Lewis families. The collection also includes information on the aforementioned societies, and some student publications of John Marshall High School in Richmond, Va.

The Southern Cross of Honor award, which later became the Cross of Military Service, originated on Oct. 13, 1862 as an act of the Confederate Congress to recognize the courage and good conduct of officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Confederate army.
