The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, founded in 1863, recognized the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen in 1874. The combined Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen (BLF & E) represented a wide spectrum of railroad occupations in labor negotiations.
