Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Frank S. Dolley was born in Maine, graduated from Pomona College in 1907, and completed Bowdoin Medical School in 1911. He settled permanently in Los Angeles in 1929, where he was a prominent thoracic surgeon. George Horatio Derby was born on April 3, 1823, in Dedham, Massachusetts. He graduated from West Point in 1846 and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Topographic Corps. He mapped the San Diego River in 1853 before moving to San Francisco in 1854 to marry Mary A. Coons. John Forster (1814-1882), immigrated from his native England to Mexico in 1831 and two years later settled in California. In 1837 Forster converted to Catholicism and married Isidora Ygnacia Pico, sister of Pio Pico (1801-1894), the last Mexican governor.
