Miscellaneous Records, 1890-1984.

The collection contains materials from African-American women and organizations around Indiana. Individuals include Anna Hutchinson, poet P.J. Gibson, Leora Brown, Barbara Hodge, Dorothy Ann Malone, Lorene Taylor Turner, Marcia Warrington, George and Ida Goins, and actress Helen C. Whitelowe. Organizations include the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, the St. Pierre Ruffin Club, Olivet A.M.E. Church and St. Peters masonic lodge, all of South Bend; the Soul People Repertory Company of Indianapolis; the Chumming Club and Mt. Pisgah Missionary Church in Kokomo; the Indiana Federation of Colored Women's Clubs; and the South Calvary, Mt. Paran, and Mt. Zion Baptist Churches of Indianapolis. Also included is a copy of Barbara Shannon's history tracing Africans to Harrison County, Ind., an article on African-American coal miners, two South Bend newspapers including articles on the first A.M.E. Zion Church and Oscar DePriest, and photographs.

The project was initiated in 1977 to collect materials concerning the history of African-American women in the Middle West. The Indianapolis section of the National Council of Negro Women coordinated collecting efforts in Indiana. The second phase, 1982-1984, was supported by an NEH grant as a feasibility study.
