William B. Goodwin research collection and family papers, 1845-1932.

Personal, business, and research correspondence, original documents, patents related to improvements in automobiles, notes, drafts of books and essays, and copies of colonial documents collected by a Hartford, Connecticut, insurance executive and archaeologist who studied foreign cultures in America. His research topics were varied and included Fenwick and the early settlement of Saybrook, Connecticut, the Spanish settlement of Jamaica and Haiti, the voyages of Christopher Columbus particularly in relation to Jamaica, the origin of a stone village in New Hampshire, evidence of the Irish in America before colonization, the history of prints documenting the Boston Massacre, early American furniture and paintings, books, and the history of the Goodwin family. His papers also document his activities with the Walpole Society, Berkeley Divinity School, Wadsworth Atheneum and the Henry Whitfield House. Correspondents include Frank Starr, J. Frederick Kelly, Wallace Nutting, William Sumner Appleton, George Dudley Seymour, Norman Isham, Harry A. Wright and Israel Sack. The collection also includes some correspondence of his father Francis Goodwin and of James Goodwin. Of particular interest are specifications and blue prints for Goodwin's home in Hartford, and a 1699 document signed by John Wintrhop appointing John Hooker as Justice of the Peace.

J. Frederick Kelly was a well known scholar, architect, and restorationist. Born in New York State in 1888, he moved to New Haven in 1900 and lived here until his death in 1947. William Goodwin was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of Rev. Francis Goodwin and Mary Alsop Jackson Goodwin.
