O. Vincent Coffin papers, 1852-1921.

Primarily family, business and political correspondence of a Middletown, Connecticut, banker and insurance executive who also served as Middletown's mayor, as a state senator and as Governor. Among the topics covered in his letters are the coming of the railroad to Middletown, suggestions for or opinions about state legislation, the settlement of Andrew C. Denison's estate and the guardianship of his son William, musical performances, elections, and the construction of a bridge over the Connecticut River from Middletown. His correspondents included the Berlin Iron Bridge Company, Oliver H. Platt, Joseph R. Hawley, Sydney Crofut, the Evangelical Alliance, and Nehemiah D. Sperry. Of interest are two letters about the Whipple Home School for the Deaf in Mystic, an 1895 letter from Addie Stancliff Hale about women's right to vote, a docket of petitions before the Board of Pardons, and information concerning the activities of the state Fisheries Commission. The collection also includes letter books, deeds, scrapbooks, a journal written in 1853 while he toured upstate New York, a volume of conservator's records, 1895-1900, records of the Evangelical Alliance, a volume devoted to insurance legislation, a memorandum book, records of the Music Hall Building and Middlesex Mutual Assurance Co., records and correspondence of the Nebraska Real Estate and Livestock Association, records of the Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company, records of the Farmers & Mechanics Savings Bank of Middletown, information about the Brooklyn (N.Y.) YMCA, information about the Young Republicans Club, Ellen Elizabeth Coe's diploma from the Hartford Female Seminary, a map of a cemetery in Middletown, and personal accounts and bills and receipts.
