Coffin was born in Mansfield, New York. Completing his own education, he taught school, then moved to New York City where he was a salesman and president of the Brooklyn YMCA. After moving to Connecticut in 1864, Coffin served as executive officer of the Farmers and Mechanics Savings Bank, served as Mayor of Middletown from 1872-1873, was president of the Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company, was elected to the state senate where he served in 1887 and 1889, was elected governor of Connecticut in 1894.
