Lt. James Alden kept this journal on the U.S. expedition to explore the coast of the Antarctic continent, islands of the Pacific Ocean, and the American Northwest coast, 1838-1842. The ship sailed with a squadron from Norfolk, Va., 7 August 1838, commanded by Captain Charles Wilkes. It arrived at Rio de Janeiro, 24 November 1838 and sailed 6 January 1839. They named Vincennes Island on 2 September 1839; anchored at Sydney, 30 November 1839, and sailed 26 December 1839. On 28 January 1840 they discovered land; and recorded icebergs, mountains, whales, and the Aurora australis on 14 February 1840. They entered Honolulu harbor on 15 March 1841; anchored in San Francisco Bay, 14 August 1841; surveyed Sacramento River, August 1841; and arrived in New York, 22 June 1842.
