Patterson family papers 1785-1960.

Papers consist of correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, and business records from two pioneer families who played an important part in the early development of the Miami Valley area of Ohio: the Pattersons of Dayton and the Johnstons of Piqua. The business records cover the period 1785-1880 and relate to the Patterson Family farm, lumber mill and other business interests. Some of Col. Robert Patterson's land surveys and quartermaster records are also included. The correspondencce consists of letter between family members and friends, the bulk of which falls within the years 1820-1900. These letters are a good representation of the 19th century life and discuss business, family affairs, daily activities and politics. Included are letters from four Patterson sons who fought in the Civil War. The scrapbooks are an eclectic collection of newspaper clippings, programs, family histories, notes and memorabilia.

Col. Robert Patterson (1753-1827) was one of the founders of Lexington, Ky. He moved to the Dayton area in 1804. A veteran of the Revolutionary War, Col. Patterson continued his military career on the frontier, serving with such legendary figures as George Rogers Clark, Anthony Wayne, and Daniel Boone.
