ArchivalResource

Records 1818-1821.

Records include one ledger recording daily receipts, disbursements and third party payments. Entries include customers' names, amounts and in some cases, items purchased or sold. The customers included early settlers of the region, such as Albert Gallatin, Miller Denny, Andrew Oliphant, Isaac Clair, Martin Eberhart, Isaac Griffin and Peggy Rockefeller. The store also dealt with the Smithfield Store and Cromwell and Dobbins Store. It also apparently served as a general agent for local business as there are many transactions unrelated to typical store activities.

Little is known about the New Geneva Store. The village of New Geneva is located at the confluence of Georges Creek and the Monongahela River in Fayette County. Originally settled in 1765, the town was laid out by Albert Gallatin, later Secretary of the Treasury. Albert Gallatin's relationship with the store cannot be determined, although he was heavily involved in its activities. From the description of Records 1818-1821.
