The collection contains the correspondence, 1781-1799, of Henry Banks concerning construction and operation of mills in Shelby County, Ky., and Richmond, Va.; yellow fever in Richmond; canal land between the James River and the James River and Kanawha Canal; land in Kentucky, West Virginia, Georgia, and Virginia; and construction of the Virginia State Penitentiary. Accounts, 1781-1798, of Henry Banks; deeds, 1797-1798; plats, 1785-1786, 1797; affidavits, 1793-1797, concerning land; agreements, 1793- 1798; bonds, 1784-1796; legal documents, 1788-1800; and list of persons inprisoned for debt in Philadelphia, 1798. Also includes Banks family correspondence, 1781-1783, 1797-1798; and a letter from Thomas Jefferson, 1797 May 31, to Henry Banks about a debt due Jefferson by Dr. Thomas Augustus Taylor. The collection also contains correspondence, 1795-1796 of Henry Lee; letters received by Joseph Ball of Philadelphia, 1813-1817; fourteen land grants issued by the Virginia Land Office, 1786 and 1790, for lands now in West Virginia and Kentucky; correspondence, 1786-1816, concerning iron and the Yazoo land fraud, among other topics; accounts, 1796-1816, of Joseph Ball, John Hargrave (for iron), and Richard Mathews; bonds, 1787, of John Stockdell, and 1795, of Burgiss Allison, James Trenchard and Joseph Barnes; and papers concerning the establishment of Ohiopiomingo in Kentucky.
