Papers primarily include correspondence received by James Callen during the Civil War from his brother David Callen, a sargeant in the 4th Pennsylvania Calvary, John Irwin and Joseph Moreland, both of whom served in the 4th Calvary and Samuel Moore, who served in the medical corps. These letters include information on campaigns, including the Battle of Fredericksburg (Va.) 1862, camp, life, medical conditions, family concerns and news of friends in the war.

James Callen, recipient of most of these letters, lived in the West Manchester neighborhood of Allegheny, Pa. David Callen and Joseph Moreland served as sergeants and John Irwin as a private in the Pennsylvania 4th Calvary, 64th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers.
