Papers, 1859.

This small collection consists of three letters written to Slack from Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), and Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) in regard to a lecture that was to be given to the Fraternity Course, a literary association, in Boston on Tuesday, 1 November 1859. Douglass has been scheduled to lecture, but due to the incident at Harper's Ferry, W.V., and having U.S. marshals after him, Doulgass left the country for Canada. Thoreau took Douglass' place and delivered the lecture "The Character and Actions of Capt. John Brown."
