Miscellaneous small collections, loose correspondence, accounts, legal and other papers from Berkeley County, W. Va., collected by Thornton Tayloe Perry. Included in the small collections are papers, 1815-1822, of John Alburtis, publisher of the Martinsburg Gazette; scattered ordinances and petitions concerning Berkeley County and the corporation of Martinsburg; William R. Leigh's "Summer Night Fantasy: A Comedy" (a play set in Berkeley County); Hanna Orrick Wever Smith's "Colonial and Revolutionary Women of the South (a paper read before the Shenandoah Valley Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution); and warrants. Miscellaneous correspondence includes a letter of transmittal from the German Reformed Church of Martinsburg to the church at Smithfield (now Middleway). Miscellaneous land records include grants and patents signed by Thomas Lord Fairfax, Gov. William Gooch, and John B. Floyd. Other legal items include a slave bill of sale, 1818, and voting returns for Precint 1, Hedgesville District, 1912.

This land grant was issued in 1741 by Thomas, 6th Lord Fairfax, Baron of Cameron, to Richard Brown (d. 1745), descendent of Quaker minister William Brown. The grant was one of five that Richard Brown had received in Virginia's Northern Neck; at the time of his death, he owned a total of 2,774 acres in Loudoun County.
