Simon was born in Burlington, Vt. on September 23, 1926. He entered Harvard University in 1943, received his bachelor's degree in 1946, his master's degree in 1948, and his Ph. D. in Chemistry in 1949. During his education at Harvard, he worked with many notable chemists, including Paul D. Bartlett and Gilbert Stork. His research was completed under Robert Burns Woodward. Robert Burns Woodward (1917-1979) joined the Chemistry Department at Harvard University in 1938. He was appointed Morris Loeb Professor of Chemistry in 1958 and held the Donner Professorship of Science from 1960 until his death.
