Evelyn Handler assumed the duties of President of the University of New Hampshire on August 1, 1980. She was inaugurated on October 20, 1980. She was the University's 17th president and the first female to hold the position. Prior to this posting, Handler was the Dean of the Division of Science and Mathematics at her alma mater, Hunter College. In 1861, the United States federal government approved the Morrill Act which set aside land in each state for the founding of public higher education.
