Correspondence, memoranda, articles, lectures, short stories, journal and memoirs, research notes, musical compositions on naval themes, official orders, reports, schedules, clippings, printed materials, scrapbooks, prints, slides, photos, and other papers, relating to Dunn's naval career and his writings and research projects relating to naval history. Includes material relating to World War I service as inspector of storage batteries for the Bureau of Steam Engineering, tour of duty (1919-1921) as aide and assistant to Admiral Albert P. Niblack, chief of staff of U.S. naval forces operating in European waters, command (1925-1928) of the destroyer McFarland, and command of river gunboat Mindanao (1931-1932) and destroyer Pillsbury (1933-1934) in the South China Sea. Topics include the occupation of Fiume, Italy (now Rijeka, Croatia) by Gabriele d'Annunzio in 1919, devastation of Europe in the aftermath of World War I, protection of U.S. citizens in Nicaragua following Emiliano Chamorro's seizure of power in 1927, Japanese occupation of Shanghai in 1932, activities of Chinese Communist Party (Chung-kuo kung ch'an tang), and political and economic conditions in China in the early 1930s.
