The National Committee for Peaceful Alternatives was initiated in 1949 by a group of clergymen, teachers, businessmen and professional men and women who opposed the North Atlantic Military Alliance. In 1950 the Committee planned a Mid-Century Conference for Peace, held in Chicago, out of which came a number of local committees and a policy and plan of action opposed to "peace through force" and also opposed to the Truman administration's Cold War policy.
