William Alphonso Murrill (1869-1957) was a mycologist, taxonomist and writer. His specialty was the Basidiomycetes. In 1904 he joined the New York Botanical Garden as an Assistant Curator, succeeding Franklin S. Earle as staff mycologist. He was Assistant Director from 1909-1919 and Curator and Supervisor of Public Instruction from 1919 to 1924. Murrill founded and edited the journal "Mycologia".
