William Kantor, born of Russian Jewish parents in Philadelphia in 1893, became a socialist and an absolutist conscientious objector to World War I. He was imprisoned for his pacifist convictions and became acquainted with members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Kantor eventually became a convinced Friend. His imprisonment sites included Camp Meade, Fort Jay, Fort Leavenworth, and Alcatraz, from which he was dishonorably discharged in 1919. From the description of Colle...
