The Harvard Dental School was founded in 1867 by the Harvard Corporation. Early deans of the school were Nathan Cooley Keep (1868-1872), Thomas Barnes Hitchcock (1872-1874), Thomas H. Trimble (Chicago, Ph.D. 1918) was Edward S. Wood Assistant Professor of Biological Chemistry at Harvard Medical School from 1924 to 1955 and special consultant to the dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard University 1956- .
