Rugg photograph album, 1898-1900.

This photograph album consists of 165 black and white prints and 11 cyanotypes. The first half of the album documents David Rugg's time spent in New Mexico and Arizona in 1898 where he attempted to recover from tuberculosis. A few of the places documented in New Mexico include: Albuquerque, Puerto de Launa, Soda Dam, Isleta, and Santa Fe. In Arizona, there are photographs of the Mojave Indians and Chalcedony Park. The second half of the album consists of photos taken around 1899-1900 in Vermont, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, New York, Connecticut, and a small number from Amsterdam and Brussels. Several members of Rugg's family and friends appear in the photos. Included are Albert A. Rugg, Mary L. Rugg, J. Q. A. Rugg, Harold Goddard Rugg, the King family, Lucretia and David Bronson, and B. P. Ruggles.

Dr. David Fletcher Rugg was born in Londonderry, Vermont to William W. and Rachel (Dodge) Rugg on December 15, 1852. David received his education as a medical student at the University of Vermont (UVM) and at Dartmouth University. He graduated valedictorian from UVM in 1876 and went on to practice medicine in Hartland, Vermont. On December 28, 1881, David married Julia A. Goddard and they had one child, Harold Goddard Rugg, who later became an Assistant Librarian at Dartmouth University. In 1897...
