Dr. David Fletcher Rugg was born in Londonderry, Vermont to William W. and Rachel (Dodge) Rugg on December 15, 1852. David received his education as a medical student at the University of Vermont (UVM) and at Dartmouth University. He graduated valedictorian from UVM in 1876 and went on to practice medicine in Hartland, Vermont. On December 28, 1881, David married Julia A. Goddard and they had one child, Harold Goddard Rugg, who later became an Assistant Librarian at Dartmouth University. In 1897, David Rugg contracted tuberculosis, which he battled until his death in 1900.
