Records, 1880-1955.

The records are manuscript and printed materials donated to and collected by the Louisiana Division. Among the original materials are case files (arbitrations, charges, claims, etc.), photographs, and a single subject file dealing with the alleged oldest bale of cotton grown in America. The printed materials include various reports issued by the Exchange (stock of cotton in the city, cotton exported from the U.S., and the reports of the Secretary of the Exchange), miscellaneous reports, programs, etc., and miscellaneous pictorial items depicting the Exchange buildings over the years. The Division also has additional publications of the Exchange (annual reports, charters, etc,) in its book collection. The file on the oldest bale of cotton documents the history of a bale of cotton from a crop grown in rural Mississippi in ca. 1862. This bale was exhibited at several international expositions and following the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, was sold to a local (St. Louis) cotton firm in 1905. Another owner later donated the bale to the Cotton Exchange in 1845; Exchange gave it to the LSU School of Agriculture in 1962. The file includes correspondence, histories of the bale, newsclippings, and a photograph. Among the correspondents are representatives of the various business concerns involved, Mississippi Governor Theodore G. Bilbo, and U.S. Senator Nathaniel B. Dial of South Carolina.
