Hide Profile

The New Orleans Cotton Exchange was founded in 1871 to provide a place for cotton trading and related activities in the Crescent City; to settle disputes arising over trades; to establish rules, regulations, etc. governing trading; to facilitate the exchange of information vital to cotton trading; and generally to promote such trading in New Orleans. The Exchange had a board of directors, officers, and several committees (dealing with membership, information & statistics, trade, classification & quotations, finance, credit, and books). By the early 1960s the business of the Exchange had declined due to the decrease in volume of futures trading and new government regulations. On July 9, 1964 the New Orleans Cotton Exchange formally ceased operations.
