Archives, ca. 1940-2005.

The archives are in two parts. The first part consists of the working files of the magazine, including correspondence files organized alphabetically by author, manuscript submissions, copyrights & permissions, author biographies & photographs, and design, production and promotion files. Some letters from writers have been transcribed or photocopied, and some original letters have been segregated into "autograph" files. The original order of the files has been maintained. The files include records generated during the editorships of Edward Weeks (1938-1966), Robert Manning (1966-1980), William Whitwell (1980-1999), Michael Kelly (1999-2003), and managing editor, Cullen Murphy (2003-2006). The second part of the archives consists of papers of Edward Weeks, including transcripts of radio interviews and broadcasts from his 1940s program "The Editor at Home," speeches and lectures, editorials, photographs, honorary degrees & awards, and a manuscript of his unpublished memoir "An Open Heart." The Weeks papers are partially processed and have a finding aid.
