Carolyn Haywood papers, 1884-1991.

This collection contains the personal and literary papers of children's author and illustrator Carolyn Haywood. The collection consists of manuscripts, illustrations, proofs, sketchbooks, correspondence, clippings, audiovisual materials, photographs, scrapbooks, diplomas, and awards. Fifty-three titles are represented in the book manuscripts and illustrations. Notable correspondents include Haywood's mother, Mary Emma Cook Haywood, her brother George Haywood, and her editors Caroline Stuart McDougal and Constance Epstein. This collection also houses a wealth of materials related to the "Red Rose Girls." Haywood kept subject files on Jessie Willcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green (Elliott), and Violet Oakley, which include photographs of and clippings about the women and their work. There are also correspondence files with Jessie Willcox Smith and Violet Oakley.

Jessie Willcox Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1863. She originally studied to be a kindergarten teacher and actually served in that capacity before accidentally discovering a propensity for drawing. She's one of the few illustrators I've profiled who wasn't an astonishing child prodigy. She was probably around 20 before she took up a pencil. Initial studies were quickly replaced with formal courses at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where she learned from Thomas Eakins, and others. ...
