Conservatory of Music Records, 1841-present

1841-present

The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College is one of two major divisions of the College; the other is the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1837, George Nelson Allen, a student, was named instructor of sacred music; he later became a professor (1841-64) and in 1865, two of his students, John P. Morgan and George W. Steele, established a conservatory which was joined to the college in 1867. Under the directorship of Fenelon B. Rice (1871-1901), the conservatory attained a position of prominence which it still holds. The conservatory awards the B.M., B.F.A., B.A., and M.M. degrees in music history, ethnomusicology, theory, composition, education and all areas of performance and also offers a diploma in performance.
