Collection includes the preliminary design and layout for the book (21 x 16 cm.), which contains 44 pages of graphite and watercolor sketches with the original text for the Babar story; the dummy with the original handwritten text and many of the original ink and watercolor illustrations (27 p.); Jean de Brunhoff's notes on color for his illustrations (11 p.); draft illustrations in pencil with draft text (53 p.); watercolor studies (4 p.); and variant illustrations for the Babar cover and for the first page of the book (3 p.).

Jean de Brunhoff was born on 9 December 1899 in Paris. He was a painter in the Impressionist tradition until he began to create children's books. He wrote and illustrated a total of six story books about Babar, the King of the elephants, as well as The ABCs of Babar, before he died of tuberculosis on 16 October 1937 at the age of 37. Jean de Brunhoff was born in 1899 in Paris, France. he attended the Ecole Alsacienne and studied painting with Othon Friesz. He was a painter, author and illustrator of books for children. He created the "Babar" books, which were about a civilized elephant. He died in 1937, but his son Laurent continued the series, beginning in 1945 when he began to paint seriously.
