Variant namesJean de Brunhoff was born in 1899 in Paris, France. he attended the Ecole Alsacienne and studied painting with Othon Friesz. He was a painter, author and illustrator of books for children. He created the "Babar" books, which were about a civilized elephant. He died in 1937, but his son Laurent continued the series, beginning in 1945 when he began to paint seriously. Laurent de Brunhoff was born in 1925 in Paris, France. Like his father he was a painter, author and illustrator of children's books. He immigrated to the United States in 1985. Laurent de Brunhoff was born on 30 August 1925 in Paris to Cecile and Jean de Brunhoff. He studied Fine Arts at Academie de La Grande Chaumiere, Montparnasse. His father died before completing the paintings for Babar and Father Christmas. Laurent finished the paintings for a few pages of this book and illustrated the cover. He published Babar's Cousin: That Rascal Arthur at the age of twenty-one.
