Papers of Junius Spencer Morgan consist mainly of letters, but also contain some personal items such as diaries, receipts, pamphlets, menus, a diplomatic visa, and a portion of the contents of his will. The correspondence includes letters from business associates and friends discussing financial matters and current events, such as the American Civil War and the Panic of 1857. The correspondence also includes a large portion of outgoing letters to members of his family: Mary Lord, Frances Tracy Morgan, John Pierpont Morgan, James Pierpont, John Pierpont, and Amelia Sturges. Born in 1813, Junius Spencer Morgan began his career first as a partner with the firm Morris Ketchum in New York, and then as a partner with Howe, Mather & Co. in Hartford.
