Documents the near year-long trip to Europe taken by Amelia Sturges from February through December 1859. The diary includes entries of her trip preparations; the passage to England; her companions, including her host Junius Spencer Morgan; and her daily activities in London, primarily sightseeing, riding, shopping, and visiting. Throughout her stay with the Morgans, Sturges frequently sent and received letters to and from home. During this time one of her correspondents was the son of her host and future husband, J. Pierpont Morgan. In the spring of that year, her mother, father and two younger brothers joined her in England and together the Sturges family toured Europe. The diary records the family's destinations and activities as well as Amelia's thoughts and impressions of their travels. Some of these entries contain pressed flowers and foliage labeled with the name of the city or site from which they were collected. The diary concludes with the family's voyage back to the United States and Amelia's return to New York society. Although many of the entries are brief--some only a few lines long--they often express a sense of adventure and good humor that enable the reader to construct an image of the writer.

Born in 1813, Junius Spencer Morgan began his career first as a partner with the firm Morris Ketchum in New York, and then as a partner with Howe, Mather & Co. in Hartford. In 1836, he married Juliet Pierpont; the couple relocated their family to Boston in 1850 when Morgan joined the firm J.M. Beebe & Co. Amelia "Memie" Sturges Morgan was the first wife of J. Pierpont Morgan. They married on October 7, 1861, despite her ill health, and left immediately for a honeymoon trip to Europe.
