Autograph letter signed : New York, to H.D. Gilpin, 1859 May 24.

Former U.S. Attorney General, saying how much he enjoyed the American west and predicting an influx of European immigrants to the area: "If the people of Europe knew what is awaiting them beyond the Allegheny Mountains, they would come by millions (instead of thousands) and share the advantages of that land of promise." He goes on to express disgust at the European war: "Here we have another Bonaparte invading Italy under the pretence [sic] of benefitting its people, just sixty years after another actor of the same name performing a similar part on the same stage, with like pretences ..."
