Hoping to see him at a Friends meeting in Cambridge, thanking him for suggesting that she do a story on Prudence Crandall, who "worked so hard to educate girls of all colors and races together"; thanking him for his reviews of her books, including Brave Interval (1952) and The Carey Girl (1956); congratulating him on his book Ralph Waldo Emerson: Portrait of a Balanced Soul (1974) and recalling Emerson's influence on her as a teenager; and hoping he can come visit with her and Elizabeth Gray Vining (b. 1902), who is working on a book on John Greenleaf Whittier [Mr. Whittier, 1974].

Elizabeth McGreal Yates was born in Buffalo, New York in 1905. She wrote books for both adults and children, but is best remembered as an author of children's books. A notable success was her 1950 publication of Amos Fortune, a children's book based on the true story of an African prince who becomes a slave in America and later gains his freedom.
