Autograph letter signed, dated : Turin, 22 March 1861, to Léon Escudier in Paris, 1861 Mar. 22.

Observing that what Escudier says about Wagner's fiasco Tannausher [i.e. the Paris production of Tannhäuser] is quite true, expressing regret that the work was not well received, otherwise he would have come to hear it and learn how "musica dell'avvenire" [music of the future] is being created, suggesting that it is better to write music as it comes from the mind and heart, saying that he has never seen a note of Wagner's but has read his drama and has never encountered such childish trifle (bambocciata)--when Verdi was three years old his grandmother told him stories a thousand times more interesting--, replying to an invitation from Escudier [actually from the director of the Opéra-Comique] to write something for that theatre by saying that he has no desire to write and that if he should write for Paris he would much prefer the Opéra, expressing hope that the emperor will quickly withdraw his troops from Rome before things get entangled in Naples, etc.
